Miranda Lim

Principal Investigator

Miranda Lim's laboratory pursues basic scientific questions that translate to her clinical work as a neurologist and sleep medicine physician. Miranda leads the research team on studying the role of sleep in neurological disorders such as brain injury, PTSD, autism, and dementia.

Miranda completed her MD at Emory University and her PhD thesis with Larry Young on vasopressin receptors and monogamy in voles. Publications from graduate school resulted in a Nature paper in 2004 and the Donald Lindsley Prize in Behavioral Neuroscience in 2005. She did a post-doc at Emory examining corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in vole social behavior which resulted in publications in Journal of Comparative Neurology and Hormones & Behavior. During her neurology residency at Washington University in Saint Louis, Miranda worked in the labs of David Holtzman, David Brody, and Robert Mach on sleep, Alzheimer's, and TBI in mouse models, resulting in publications in Science, Journal of Neurotrauma, Neuroreport, and Brain Research. Following a clinical fellowship in Sleep Medicine at University of Pennsylvania in 2011, Miranda did a post-doctoral research fellowship jointly between the laboratories of Allan Pack in the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology and Akiva Cohen at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, identifying a dietary therapy for sleep impairment in TBI. Her work there was published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation and Science Translational Medicine.

Miranda enjoys mentoring young scientists and takes her role as a mentor very seriously. Many undergraduates and research assistants in the lab have successfully gone on to graduate and medical schools. Two students from her laboratory were recently featured in the OHSU Summer Equity Research Program, and her laboratory represents a Research Learning Community through the newly NIH-funded BUILD EXITO program (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity, Enhancing Cross-disciplinary Infrastructure Training at Oregon).

In addition to running a basic research laboratory, she is Board Certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine, and sees patients and supervises clinical sleep fellows in the VA Portland Health Care System Sleep Disorders Clinic. She is also committed to mentoring nursing trainees through the OHSU School of Nursing.

Beyond the lab and the clinic, Miranda loves spending time with her husband Nick, their 3 young children (Leo, Carmen & Odessa), and beagle Binka (R.I.P.), and cat Ribson. They look forward to exploring the great Oregon outdoors.
